SO YOU WANT TO WORK IN FASHION: THE APPLICATION

*Enjoy this throwback picture of Intern Sara Anne*

Okay, you have finally found some applications whether it be on LinkedIn or the company website directly, now is where the rubber hits the road. The thing about getting into fashion is you are one in a million. Now I don't mean this in a discouraging way- if anything this should make you want to stand out more. The one thing I have noticed, is it is all in the details. Today, just like last week, I am going to share some tips with you from my experience and advice I have received from others. I hope that you all continue to find this series helpful and real!

Tip 1: Customize your Resume to the Job You Are Applying to

This is one of the biggest game changers and common mistakes. The first thing you want to do when applying to a job is look at the job descriptions and see what matches with your past job experience and phrase your bullet points to align with their expectations. Now this doesn't mean lying, but if there is a similar task that you have done, note it. Also if there are skills, projects, or interests you have work on, note it! Resumes do not just have to be a list of professional job experience. Companies want to assess the learning curve you will experience if they hire you. Customizing your resume also relates to the type of company you are applying to. This means if you are applying to a more creative place, make your resume more visually exciting, vice versa, if you are applying to a more analytical position, you can still be fun, but just maybe be a little more structured. Flattery will get you everywhere as long as it is genuine and intentional!

Tip 2: Cover Letters are your Best Friends

I know that there has been a lot of back and forth in the HR world about the significance of cover letters. Personally, I have noticed that cover letters allow you to fill in the gaps of your resume. You can show a little more of your personality and answer some of the basic level interview questions right off the bat like "why do you want to work here"; "tell me about yourself" ; "what makes you stand out".  Just some formatting reminders: IT SHOULD NOT BE LONGER THAN A PAGE and make sure everything you are saying is actually relevant!

Tip 3: If You are Including References, Make Sure They Know

There is no more awkward feeling than getting a random phone call and realizing it will determine if someone gets a job or not.  It is just good manners to give someone a heads up, especially if you have not been in contact with them in a hot minute. Obviously I would recommend listing references of people you directly reported to and  *this is a big one* had a good working relationship with. You want these people to hype you up and affirm the employer or HR rep that you are just as amazing as they think you are. Usually references are required in the hiring process so getting ahead of the curve will help you look prepared!

Tip 4: CHECK FOR SPELLING ON EVERYTHING

Anyone who has hired anyone will tell you the biggest eye sore is grammar and spelling errors- especially on the simple things! Reread everything at least twice before hitting submit just to make sure everything is crystal clear! You would be surprised how much it could help your application.
