Movies and TV are beautiful things. They allow us to escape the tasks of daily life into whatever adventure we are feeling up for. It is obviously no lie that I have a "passion for fashion" and when you are passionate about something, it is reflected in your everyday life. You can learn a lot from television and movies, especially when it comes to fashion and retail. There is so much more then Project Runway! So in honor of the new need to find shows to binge, I though I would give you a list of thing to watch that might actually help entertain and educate!
TV Shows
Sex and the City
Carrie Bradshaw and her three other friends navigate life in New York City. Although this show is not directly addressing the life of a buyer or the retail industry from a professional perspective, the outfits, the terminology, and just plain entertainment the show brings is unmatched. This is available on Amazon Prime Video!
Gossip Girl
Similar to Sex and the City, this show offers more entertainment than education. It is also based in New York City, which is probably why I like it as well. I also just always feel classy when I watch it because I get to temporarily place myself in the world of "Manhattan's elite". It is teen drama, but crossed with the world of couture fashion and guest stars like Rachel Zoe, Tim Gunn, Tory Burch, and more. It you want to learn the world of designer or at least the names of them all, watch this show! It is also a way for you to feel the dram without being in the drama. This is available on Netflix!
Girl Boss
CEO and founder of Nasty Gal, Sophia Amoruso, learns how to create an online business for herself. This is not a documentary series, but it is based on a true story. It is a very easy show to watch through, only being one season, but the grit of this girl is so motivating. She is creative, quick, and relentless. She lives as though she has nothing to lose and becomes the boss of herself and makes her mark on a new kind of fashion! This show is great if you are stuck in a rut and want to get back to the grind. The real Sophia also has a podcast and a book talking about her experiences if you realize you want more. This is available on Netflix!
The Carrie Diaries
Quite literally one of my favorite shows of all time. This show truly is what first sparked my interest in working in the fashion industry without having to be a designer. It is the prequel to Sex and the City, following Carrie Bradshaw in high school as she gets her first internship and job with a big magazine in New York City. She navigates the balance between high school with her friends and try to establish herself in her dream industry. Another easy show to get through only being two seasons. I love this show so much with all of the character development and related to how much Carrie wants it. This show is available on Netflix, bit recently was taken off, so it is probably a show that you will need to rent, but it is so worth it!
The Bold Type
Inspired by the former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, this show follows three millennial women in New York who work for a fictional global magazine, Scarlet. Scarlet is dedicated to empowering in the female voice through fashion, beauty, and current events. I have just gotten into this show and it is pretty good! It is a "Freeform/ABC Family" show and sometimes it feels like one, but overall, it is great for some simple entertainment with an underlying theme of female empowerment! This is available on Hulu!
Movies
The Devil Wears Prada
This is one of my top three favorite movies ever. Such an iconic, and partly accurate depiction of the world in fashion. Meryl Streep is absolutely amazing in her role as editor-in-chief of Runway, the top fashion magazine. This movie is about Andy, a fashion outsider, who gets the coveting job of being assistant to the editor-in-chief of Runway. She starts her time at Runway unaware and essentially ignorant to the world of designer fashion and soon become a part of the world she used to hate. My favorite part of this movie is this one scene where Miranda, played by Meryl Streep, explains to Andy, played by Anne Hathaway, how even though she may not want to believe it, she plays as strong of a role in the consumption of fashion as the next person, laying out the time line of clothes going from couture to off-price. I love this movie for people who don't think that fashion applies to their lives or think that fashion is a closed off world. Unfortunately this move has to be rented, but is available to rent off of Amazon Prime!
Confessions of a Shopaholic
A movie that I feel is made form me. It follows Rebecca Bloomwood, a textbook shopaholic. She is so much of a shopaholic that she has racked up a serious amount of debt that literally follows her around until it gets ugly. The reason why I love this movie is because I really connect to her love of clothes. It is so much deeper than pretty things, it is creativity, escapism, and always getting to play dress up! There is also a little bit of romcom vibes in the movie and who doesn't love that? Again, unfortunately this movie has to be rented, but is available to rent off of Amazon Prime!
First Monday in May
Finally getting around to the actual educational aspect of this list. The First Monday in May follows the evolution and creation of fashion's most exclusive party of the year, the Met Gala. This documentary follows the 2015 Met Gala and all that went into it. It is so crazy to see how early they start planning all of the details, how much work goes into it, and how much of a literal queen Anna Wintour is. This truly is an educational piece for one of the most influential events. This is available on Hulu!
The September Issue
The September Issue of any magazine is the biggest and most included content our of the year because it is the turn of a season with the most amount of ads and collaborations. This documentary follows Anna Wintour as she prepares the 2007 September Issue of Vogue, making a total of 840 pages. Watch as she curates a book filled with content that is guaranteed to be perfect for all of her readers. Although this movie is a little older it is still a must watch and even an opportunity to compare the world of fashion and print media to the world today. This available on Amazon Prime Video!
Clueless
A true classic. Not as education, but following the life of Cher in the center of Beverly Hills, you'll see why this movie is on the list! This is available on Netflix and Hulu!
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Essential to say the least. Audrey Hepburn being the style icon that she is introduces the look of the little black dress to the big screen and does it effortlessly. This is available on Hulu!
Stay UNIQUE,
Sara Anne
