The Truth Behind The Inauguration Looks

This year's Inauguration Day marked a historic stamp on our country with Kamala Harris becoming the first female Vice President and first Vice President of color. It was nothing short of show stopping and I think we were all just as excited about the outfits as we were the change that was coming to the country. One of my favorites things about fashion is how it plays a role in the messages we want to get across and the impact it has in how we are perceived as leaders. Today I will be breaking down the trends and the colors behind the famous looks you saw on that infamous day.

Color Breakdowns

The color purple was an obvious note of the Inauguration events. Dr. Jill Biden stared the spotlight color the night prior leading into the next day with Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and Kamala Harris sporting the color purple together. This color is meant to be an reference to bipartisanship, striving for the goal of unity, being a blend of red and blue. In a time where our country is dangerously divided, this message gives the American people hope for the future our country faces. In addition to togetherness, Shakaila Forbes-Bell- Founder of Fashion Psychology, notes the color purple is associated with women's suffrage, peace, and nobility.

In Dr. Biden's powder blue moment, we see the color symbolizing comfort, security, and trust. In the past couple of years in the country facing levels of uncertainty in our health, financials, and community standards, both blue and purple bring out hopeful and content feelings for this new administration. These colors stand for the platforms they want to uplift and goal of governing in a positive, dignified way.

Monochromatic Ensembles

From Jennifer Lopez to The Biden Grandchildren, monochromatic looks were all over our television screens. Not only was this look very flattering to all who took part, it also gives off a message of straightforwardness. A classic form of dressing in the political word, giving an ode to the old school. This ensemble trend of the day shows the coordinated front the administration will bring and all of its supporters. It gives hope for the fashion forward, tailored America coming our way.

Kamala's Designers of Choice

In a time where racial injustices are coming to the surface in every form of life, Kamala makes a statement with her designers of choice in her infamous Inauguration looks. Choosing labels including Pyer Moss, Christopher John Rogers, and Sergio Hudson, the vice president gives a platform for diversity and up and coming creators, an ideal she actively and continues to fight for in her role. Kamala hopes to give black and other people of color in the fashion world a place to be put on display, something many white designers have been given for years.
